** UPDATE **
Regretfully, Simon Calcavecchia was in an automobile accident last Friday the 26th. Luckily, Simon and his companions are all okay but his specialized van for transporting Simon, his wheelchair and all his presentation gear was, by Simon’s description, “Totaled.” =( We are so grateful that Simon is unharmed and we assured him that we will look at the calendar in hopes of rebooking the disability awareness assembly that was supposed to take place Monday morning this week. Please stay tuned. For more information on Simon and his children’s books please visit frankandmustard.com.
January’s character traits are highlighting “grit and perseverance.” With that in mind, Alki PTA is excited to host an all school assembly Monday January 29th when we welcome guest speaker, Simon Calcavecchia, and his presentation on disability awareness. A little bit about Simon, in his own words:
“In 2002, I moved to Australia to follow my dream of playing rugby. After my third game of the season, I was injured in a scrum which left me with C5/6 quadriplegia. After graduating from The Evergreen State College, I spent most of my time volunteering with preschool children who inspired me to write about “The Adventures of Frank and Mustard.”
The book features Frank, a dog that uses a wheelchair and his best buddy Mustard. I wrote this book series so that I could share my experiences of living with quadriplegia. I also created it to spread more disability awareness in children’s books to inspire kids to have a positive mindset, and to empower students that are facing tough challenges. During my presentation, I share my personal story by using videos, music, and allow time for students to ask me questions about my disability.”
Simon looks forward to meeting our Alki students at 2 assemblies on the 29th for K-2 and 3-5. For more information please visit www.frankandmustard.com.
