Family Resources for COVID-19 Related School Closures

Beginning Monday, March 16, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) will be distributing lunches every weekday at 26 school sites throughout the city.

All SPS students can participate. Lunch distribution sites can be found on this webpage. Additional information about meal pick up will be shared with families on March 13. These 26 sites will become a central location for family and student resource distribution.

Attached information on school meal sites is translated in six languages and includes the address and any specific pick up directions. The district is working on a reminder translated phone call to families in each region with the list of schools in that area that will be distributing lunches.   AmharicChineseEnglishSomaliSpanishVietnamese.

At this point, SPS does not need volunteers.  They are trying to minimize community congregations.  Also, please note, STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO BE PRESENT TO GET A MEAL.   A parent or caregiver can pick up lunches for the number of kids he/she has at home.

The district is also working on a pilot program whereby bus drivers can deliver meals along their regular bus routes.  We will send more information about this and more as soon as it is received.

Free Groceries:

If you or anyone you know – at ANY age – needs groceries or meals at no charge, please come to Northwest Harvest’s SODO Community Market at 1915 4th Ave S in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood. You can pick up pre-bagged produce, prepared foods, and shelf-stable groceries right at the door – no need to enter the grocery area. All are welcome and no ID is required.

We will be available to families while local school districts develop solutions to make sure children are getting meals while schools across the region are closed due to health concerns relating to the COVID-19 virus.

SODO Community Market hours are Monday, 1:30 to 7:30 PM and Wednesdays & Fridays, 8:00AM to 2:00PM.

We plan on having a variety of healthy foods to distribute freely for everyone who comes.

PLEASE share this post to help ensure all those who need food during this time can get food.

Alki CaresWe know that the 6 week school closure is going to cause extreme hardship on many of you.  Your needs may be ranging from basic supplies, food, childcare, and much more! If you and your family are in need, please reach out to Principal Deese directly at rskido@seattleschools.org.  In collaboration with our PTA and other supportive organizations, Alki Elementary will work to get you the help you need!

If you are a family who might be able to help other families in need, please contact Principal Deese (rskido@seattleschools.org) and/or donate to tinyurl.com/AlkiCares.  Please consider supporting those families who have been severely affected by the school closures and COVID19 outbreak.  Funds raised will go towards purchasing grocery gift cards and other things as we learn more about what is needed.

Our Alki community is strong and many have already reached out to offer help. As many of you are aware, closure of Seattle Public Schools means more than just a postponement of learning for students. Many families rely on the schools for child care, meals and other community support.  Every bit helps!
